Timor Leste 2025

Day 2 - An Unforgettable Day

01.07.25

Today was an unforgettable day spent exploring the heart of Dili. We began our journey at the Chega! Museum, where we heard powerful and moving stories from survivors of the 12th of November 1991. The experience deepened our understanding of Timor-Leste’s resilience and history.

We then visited Santa Cruz Cemetery, where we learnt more about the events of that tragic day and paid our respects.

In the afternoon, we headed to the Presidential Palace. One of the highlights was serving lunch to local school children and getting a tour of the school, the palace, and its beautiful grounds. We also had the incredible opportunity to take a photo with the President — though we all had to pause for a moment as Mrs Fisher rummaged through her bag, trying to find a special hand-made red gum pen, crafted by Matthew and his father, to present as a gift. This moment unfolded to the disbelief of Edie and the President’s assistant, and the amused amazement of the President himself.

Afterwards, we stopped by the plaza to collect SIM cards and pick up some local goodies. Back at the orphanage, we played soccer and volleyball with the kids, sharing laughter, smiles, and a sense of community.

To finish the day, we enjoyed a delicious dinner at Pro Ema, a special restaurant that supports women rebuilding their lives after escaping domestic violence. A perfect way to end a meaningful and inspiring day.
