Art in the Junior School

01.07.20

Year 1 students have been working on creating embossed foil art. They were required to plan a design and then draw it onto cardboard. Students then glued over the contour line of their design and traced it with thick wool. The remainder of the cardboard was covered with glue and then foil was carefully smoothed over the top, revealing an embossed outline of their design. Students then coloured the foil with permanent markers, leaving the top of the wool uncoloured to reveal the contour line in silver foil. This art project helped students to focus on their use of contour lines, colour, texture and shape. This term has seen Year 4 students become Fauvists. Fauvism is a style of impressionistic painting. It features bold and non-naturalistic use of colour and the limited use of detail. Henri Matisse was regarded as the movement’s leading figure. Students were challenged to channel their inner Fauvist and paint in this style. Most students chose to paint landscapes. They enjoyed the opportunity to mix paint colours and apply them in non-traditional ways.
