Subject Description

This course aims to further develop students' skills and understanding of photography as a medium for creative expression and visual communication. Through hands-on experiences with digital cameras and mobile devices, students will learn how to compose, light, frame, and edit compelling photographs across a range of genres. The course fosters critical thinking about image-making, encouraging students to consider the intention behind their photographs and the emotional or conceptual impact they wish to convey to an audience. 

Students will explore the use of photography as a storytelling tool, working within genres such as portraiture, landscape, still life, and conceptual photography. A key focus is on developing a personal visual style and the ability to communicate purposefully through images. The course nurtures creativity, independence, and reflective practice, equipping students with the foundational skills and mindset needed for further study or careers in the creative industries. 

Content

By the end of this course, students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the following topics: 

  • Use digital cameras and mobile devices with confidence. 
  • Control key technical settings such as exposure, focus, and lighting. 
  • Compose visually engaging and well-framed images. 
  • Edit photographs using industry-standard software like Lightroom or Photoshop. 
  • Work across various photographic styles, including portrait, landscape, still life, and conceptual photography. 
  • Develop and express their own creative and visual style. 
  • Think critically about images, considering effectiveness, meaning, and emotional impact. 
  • Curate and present a polished digital or print portfolio. 
  • Be prepared for further study or pathways in visual arts and creative industries. 
Assessment

Students use time outside of class hours to complete photo shoots. 

 

School Assessment 

AT1 - Specialised Skills Task x2 – 20% (600 Words each) 

  • Camera Techniques (4 Printed Images) 
  • Creative Manipulation with Photoshop (Printed poster) 

 

AT2 - Design Process and Product– 50% 3000 Words 

  • Photographic Product of own choice (book, exhibition, website) 

 

External Assessment 

AT3 - Resource Study – 30% 2000 words 

  • Part 1: Resource Investigation
