Subject Description

Photography is more than taking pictures — it’s about telling powerful stories, capturing moments, and expressing ideas in a creative and personal way. In this course, students will: 

  • Learn how to use cameras and editing tools like a pro 
  • Build their visual literacy and creative confidence 
  • Explore real-world themes like identity, community, and place 
  • Develop a portfolio of work they can be proud of 
  • Learn skills that can lead to careers in media, art, design, journalism, and marketing 

Photography connects creativity with real technical skills — and gives students a voice through visual storytelling. 

Content

By the end of this course, students will be able to demonstrate a practical understanding of the following topics: 

  • Rules of composition 
  • Photography terminology 
  • Photo Editing  
  • Lighting in photography 
  • The printing process 
  • Visual Story Telling 

 

Learning Outcomes:  

By the end of this unit, students will: 

  • Demonstrate understanding of photographic composition and technical camera settings. 
  • Apply editing techniques using software (e.g. Lightroom or Photoshop). 
  • Explore creative expression through themed photographic projects. 
  • Critically evaluate their own and others’ photographic works. 
  • Present finished photographic works in digital and printed form 
Assessment

1. Still Life Composition Project  30% 

Skills: Composition, lighting, camera control 

Description: Students create a series of still life photographs exploring lighting and composition.

 

2. Creative Portrait Project 30% 

Skills: Working with people, concept-driven imagery 

Description: Students plan and photograph a portrait series with creative styling or conceptual themes. 

 

3. Narrative Photo Essay 30% 

Skills: Storytelling, sequencing, journalistic photography 

Description: A series of 5–8 images that tell a visual story (e.g. community, event, personal story). 

 

4. Personal Folio 10% 

Skills: Analysis of photography, learning and creating a personal style 

Description: Collection of inspiration and personal photography to build a personal style
