Subject Description

Specialist Mathematics draws on and deepens students’ mathematical knowledge, skills, and understanding and provides opportunities for students to develop their skills in using rigorous mathematical arguments and proofs and using mathematical models. The subject leads to study in a range of tertiary courses such as mathematical sciences, engineering, computer science, and physical sciences. Students envisaging careers in related fields will benefit from studying this subject.

Successful completion of year 10 Mathematical Methods with a minimum of a B grade is required.

Why should a student study it?

Studying Year 11 Specialist Mathematics in South Australia is an excellent choice for students with a strong interest in mathematics and a desire to explore its more abstract and theoretical aspects. This course introduces advanced topics such as mathematical proofs, complex numbers, and vectors, laying the groundwork for further study in Year 12 and beyond. It encourages logical reasoning, precision, and problem-solving skills that are essential for success in STEM fields. Specialist Maths also complements other subjects like Physics and Mathematical Methods, making it ideal for students aiming for university pathways in engineering, science, or mathematics.

Content

Students will undertake the following topics:

  • Arithmetic and geometric sequences and series
  • Deductive Geometry
  • Vectors

Learning outcomes

By the end of Stage 1 Specialist Maths, students should:

  • Explore Advanced Mathematical Concepts: Students begin working with complex numbers, vectors, matrices, and introductory calculus, building a strong foundation for further study.
  • Develop Abstract Reasoning: The course encourages students to think logically and abstractly, using mathematical proofs and formal reasoning.
  • Apply Mathematics to Theoretical and Practical Problems: Learners solve problems in both pure and applied contexts, enhancing their analytical and modelling skills.
  • Strengthen Communication of Mathematical Ideas: Students learn to express mathematical reasoning clearly through written and symbolic forms.
  • Prepare for Stage 2 Specialist Mathematics: The course sets students up for success in Year 12 Specialist Maths and tertiary studies in STEM fields.
Assessment

Specialist Mathematics allows students to achieve the numeracy requirement in the SACE. Students who achieve a C grade or better in this subject meet the compulsory 10-credit numeracy requirement. Assessment components include:

  • Skills and Application Tasks (75% overall)
  • Mathematical Investigation (25% overall)
