Religious Education Curriculum

Religious Education
At Tenison Woods College, Religious Education is a core curriculum area at the heart of our school. As a Catholic school in South Australia, our Religious Education program is built upon the Crossways Religious Education Curriculum, the Made In the Image of God (MITIOG) curriculum, and SACE Stage 1 and 2: Spiritualities, Religion and Meaning. Religious Education is a core curriculum area, planned, taught, and assessed with the same rigor as all other subjects, from Reception to Year 12.

The Religious Education program is designed to deepen students’ understanding of the Catholic Tradition, nurture personal faith, develop moral reasoning, foster respect for others, and encourage students to engage thoughtfully with the wider world.

Crossways Religious Education Curriculum
The Crossways curriculum is a contemporary expression of Church teaching, informed by Catholic Tradition and shaped around five key areas:

  • God, Us and Faith
  • Sacred Texts
  • Moral Life
  • Church for the World
  • Sacramentality and Prayer

The Crossways curriculum also supports students in developing important skills and dispositions through the Wisdom strand:

  • Dialogue and respect
  • Interpretation and seeking truth
  • Discernment and engagement
  • Spiritual and religious self-awareness

Made In the Image of God (MITIOG)- Human Sexuality and Respectful Relationship Curriculum
In addition to Crossways, we deliver the Made In the Image of God (MITIOG) curriculum, the official Human Sexuality and Respectful Relationships program for Catholic schools in South Australia. Grounded in the belief that every person is made in God’s image and deserving of dignity and respect, the program explores identity, reproduction and reproductive health, human development and supports students in developing healthy, respectful relationships in line with Catholic teaching. The MITIOG program is age-appropriate and is taught in partnership with parents and delivered by staff who have completed mandated training.

SACE Stage 1 and 2: Spiritualities, Religion and Meaning
For our senior students, we offer SACE Stage 1 and 2: Spiritualities, Religion and Meaning, which provides opportunities to explore faith, spirituality, and ethical issues in greater depth.

The Religious Dimension Across the Curriculum
At Tenison Woods College, the religious dimension is evident not only in Religious Education but also through opportunities to connect faith with all areas of learning and school life. This approach encourages students to relate their studies, relationships, and daily experiences to Catholic values and the teachings of Jesus. Through prayer, liturgy, service, and the way we interact as a community, students are supported to grow intellectually, spiritually, and personally—preparing them to contribute positively to both the Church and the wider world.
