Thrilling finish a great highlight for cricketers

13.03.19

Last Friday, the Year 8 / 9 boy’s cricket team produced a thrilling finish in the round two match against Mount Gambier High School (MGHS). Getting down to the final wicket and with only a handful of balls to go, the boys were able to celebrate a highly memorable game that produced many highlights.

Bowling first, the Tenison bowlers, led by pace bowlers Liam Turley, Jack Domaschenz and seamer Hamish Case all produced great spells, keeping the run scoring down with MGHS scoring at only 2 runs per over in the first 10 (max 35 over match). However, some excellent batting by the dangerous duo of MGHS batter’s Hosking and Weber accelerated the run rate and MGHS were suddenly scoring rapidly, reaching 1 / 60 after 19 overs. After Jordan Stevens trapped the main stroke player Weber LBW, Harry Fisher produced an excellent spell with his off spinners, at one stage being on a hat trick. Regaining control was important and the TWC bowlers and fielders took their chances with some reliable fielding, safe catching and accurate bowling. MGHS finished at 9/99 with Harry Fisher the best of the bowlers with excellent figures of 4/4.

The run chase got off to a difficult start with top batters Harry Fisher, Hamish Case and Ollie Bennett all back in the pavilion with a concerning score of 3/10. An excellent stabilizing partnership between skipper Noah Sims (22) and Liam Turley (29) allowed the TWC team some relief and the chase was on at 3/47. However, more drama was to follow with quick wickets and suddenly we needed 15 more runs with only one wicket left. A highly tense, exciting and nail biting next 5 overs saw very mature and calm stroke play by both Ethan Sims (not out 17) and Jack Lawrence (not out 9) who steadily reached the score, with Sims hitting an excellent shot behind square leg for 4 runs to bring the team to its feet to celebrate a wonderful victory.
