Champagnat Reigns at Years 8-12 Swimming Carnival

The Tenison Woods College Years 8-12 Swimming Carnival was held on Thursday 14 February at the Mount Gambier Aquatic Centre. Despite the somewhat gloomy weather, the atmosphere proved enjoyable for all, with a new approach being taken to the annual event, that being the introduction of a participation based carnival.

Students found themselves getting more involved with the day’s events, whether that be novelty events or championship events.

Various records were broken throughout the day. Hayley Pearson broke two records, in the U/15 Female 50m Freestyle and U/15 50m Butterfly with times of 29.78 seconds and 31.75 seconds respectivley. Thomas Bignell continued to shine, breaking the record for both the U/15 Male 50m Freestyle with a time of 28.07 seconds, and the U/15 Male 50m Breastroke, with a time of 35.15 seconds. Kiah Connolly also broke two records for the day, setting a new time of 30.09 seconds for the U/16 Female 50m Freestyle, and 35.31 seconds for the U/16 Female 50m Backstroke. Finally, Luke Janssen set a new record for the U/20 Male 50m Backstroke, beating the old record of 34.77 seconds with a new time of 33.68 seconds.

Finally, the over carnival house champion was announced to eagerly awaiting students. Coming in fourth position was Woods, with a total of 890 points. Third position was filled by McAuley on 1, 068 points. Second place was claimed by MacKillop with 1, 205 points. Champagnat victoriously claimed first position with a total of 1, 503 points, remaining the swimming carnival champions for the eighth year in a row.
