2017 Cardijn Exchange

31.05.17

On Sunday 28 May, 55 Cardijn College athletes from Years 8 - 12 travelled down to Mount Gambier to compete against our Tenison Woods College students for the 31st Cardijn Annual Exchange.

The exchange began with a sightseeing tour on the Sunday afternoon, where our students showed the city students the amazing landmarks Mount Gambier has to offer. This was a great chance for everyone to get to know each other.

The second day of the visit saw the beginning of competition. We kicked off with the Boys and Girls Futsal games, with both Titans teams coached by Mr David Cole, all students competed well against very skilled and experienced Cardijn students and were successful in the girl’s game, winning 4-2. However, unfortunately the boys went down in an intense shootout 4-2. Well done to both teams for putting in great effort on the day and in trainings.

They continued to show their talent during the second half, finishing off the game with a win of 70-17. Special mention to Bella Stratford who shot 26 points for the game. The boys, who were coached by Mr Stevenson, started off with a convincing lead of 33-14 points by half time. This only increased as the game continued, finishing on top 82-25. This allowed them to create a comfortable lead at half time 5.4 to 2.2. Although the boys struggled to kick goals after half time, they still continued to push throughout the second half with some excellent defence work, stopping Cardijn from scoring. The Titans boys all played well, which allowed them to come away with a win in the final sport, defeating Cardijn 9.9 (54.9) to 3.3 (18.3).

With the great efforts our Tenison Woods College students over the three days, Tenison Woods College won the 31st Cardijn Exchange 9-2, allowing the shield to remain at our college for the third year in a row. This is an outstanding achievement made by all athletes and we especially congratulate Bella Stratford and Matt Black for being awarded the Rijken Doyle Medalists for 2017. This award acknowledges their outstanding all-round athletic ability and sportsmanship throughout the carnival.

We would like to thank Ciaran Buckley and all the other HPE staff members, Grounds men, Sugarloaf staff and BuslinkSA for their tireless efforts behind the scenes to make the exchange as successful as it was. We would also like to thank the Cardijn students for their participation in the carnival, to the Cardijn staff for their support, especially Emma Boyle (Cardijn College Sports Coordinator) for everything she has done in helping the exchange. Special mentions to our students and their parents for opening up their homes to their billets, their hospitality was fantastic and Cardijn students appreciated it.
