Teaching with Jacquline Zaccardo

22.11.17

What subjects do you teach?
This semester I have been teaching English (Year 10 & 11), History (Year 10) and Religion (Year 10).

Which is your favourite?
English is my favourite. It doesn’t just stop with ‘reading a book’. There is so much diversity to the subject – film, media, visual literacy.

Which subject do you wish you could teach?
I would love to teach Drama again, or Dance!

What has teaching at Tenison been like?
A bit of a ‘rollercoaster’ – but it has been so much fun. I have learnt more this year than I ever thought I would.
There have been many learning curves and I am incredibly lucky to work with the staff and students that I do.

Have you enjoyed your time here?
Most definitely! It has been great to come back to work at the school that I grew up in and graduated from.

What was the highlight of your year?
Meeting new students and developing relationships with them over the year, and continuing strong relationships with past students and teachers.

Can you say that you are happy with your job?
Yes I can. With teaching, you never really know what the day may bring. Going to school every morning is exciting not knowing what you may face during the day.
It makes me happy having conversations with my students. It makes me especially happy when I am teaching them something and it ‘clicks’.

If you weren’t a teacher what job would you wish to have?
I have always wanted to be a flight attendant, but sadly that will never happen – I am too short! I have also considered moving overseas to become a nanny – I love working with children!

What’s the hardest thing you've faced whilst teaching?
Time management, balancing school with my social life and the planning and marking. Teaching doesn’t just start when the morning bell goes and very rarely are you able to pack up and go at the end of the school day. You are constantly on the go (including weekends). Being a relatively young teacher, balancing my social life with school life has probably been my hardest challenge to face.

Would you recommend teaching to others?
Definitely! Especially if you love children and love working with them, and if you are up for a challenge and willing to learn and give things a go.

Can you see yourself teaching for the rest of your life?
I can see myself teaching for ‘most’ of the rest of my life – not entirely sure about all.
