Tenison Woods College took the opportunity to participate in the SESSSA Open Futsal (Indoor Soccer) competition held at Wilfred Taylor Reserve, Noarlunga, Adelaide, at the end of last week. The long-running competition provided the perfect opening to prepare for the forthcoming Cardijn Exchange and the Open Boys landed in a tough group with eventual winners, Reynella East, and runners-up, Cardijn, both coming from Pool A. The fast, physical start to the tournament caught the team a little by surprise and despite battling hard, they succumbed to Aberfoyle Park 3-0 with the score line somewhat flattering the opposition. Again a little luck and the final ball was missing in an end to end match with Reynella East and despite Leon De Cesaris best efforts and captain, Caleb Casey’s late goal, Tenison Woods College went down 2-1. We took the lead against Cardijn with a fantastic strike from James Davey before they hit back with two well taken goals of their own. In our final game against Encounter, we twice took the lead, with a composed one-on-one finish from Tyler Michielan. Harry Wilson found himself in the right position at the right time before slack marking led to two quick replies from their forwards. Overall, the entire team bar Christian Akinola will be eligible for the same competition in twelve months’ time and are eager to make amends against Cardijn next week.
The Open Girls also performed admirably, scoring seven goals across five matches against strong opposition in the form of Hallett Cove, Seaford and Reynella East. Claire Davey led the young team, comprising five year 9s, often displaying confident on-the-ball skills. Nadia Metzger found her calling after an early injury forced her into goals where she excelled, and Letitia Izzo is a star in the making as evidenced by her all round game and thunderous penalty strike. The team led twice against Cardijn before succumbing to the goal of the tournament and narrow 4-2 loss overall! The team learned a lot about how to play the fast paced indoor game and will look to overcome the travelling Cardijn squad on our own patch next week.
