Aden Clarke’s Submission the Commended by Author Jim Moloney

01.07.20

During Mrs Greenham’s Year 9 English class this term, after reading ‘A Bridge of Wisemans Cove’ by Jim Moloney, to conclude to subject, students had to submit a creative response to the novel. All of the submissions were excellent, but it was Aden Clarke’s submission that stood out. Mrs Greenham was so impressed by Aden’s response that she sent it to the author, Jim Moloney.

Here is his response:
I thought your student’s story was excellent. I found myself utterly absorbed in it and had no trouble at all believing these were the same characters I had created myself. I liked the way secondary characters like Justine, Harley and Skip were present but only as acolytes to Carl’s experience. The writer’s capacity to present Carl’s complex combination of reticence and discomfort at the events taking place and what they meant for his life showed a maturity I’ve rarely seen in school age writing and displayed a deep understanding of my novel. So, I commend the writer in the highest terms.

Both you and he might be interested to read ‘What Happened to Carl from Wiseman’s Cove’, a short story I wrote at the request of UQP for an anthology titled ‘Reading the Landscape.’ It should be available in public libraries. The story takes place 10 years after the end of ABTWC and involves Carl, who’s long since moved away to the city, returning to Wiseman’s Cove for a funeral.
