BYOD Warranty and Insurance

04.02.2018

Warranty

In Australia, devices are legally covered by a one year manufacturing warranty under Australian Consumer Law . Basic warranty addresses manufacturing faults only and does not cover accidental breakage such as cracked screens. (More information on the ACCC page)

Additional warranty may be added at the time of purchase to extend the coverage for 3 or 4 years. Please read the individual policy carefully to be sure of what is covered.

As an example, Windows laptops listed on the school's BYOD purchase portal include 3 year manufacturer warranty. The Learning With Technologies offerings also include the option to add additional accidental damage protection coverage during the selection process.

Insurance

Options for Parents and carers can include:

1. Select the 'Accidental Damage Protection' warranty upgrade during the selection process when using the Learning With Technologies purchase portal (Link to LWT purchase page)

2. Self-Insurance - Parents and carers take the risk of paying for repairs and/or replacement for loss or theft themselves. Full burden of cost lies with parents and carers for damaged, lost or stolen devices.

3. Use of third party insurance - For an additional cost parents and carers can purchase insurance via a third-party company such as iBroker. (Information here)

4. Portable Valuables/ Portable Contents on existing Home and Contents Insurance - Parents and carers can have the device covered under their house and contents insurance. Parents and carers are advised to check their insurance certificate and discuss with their insurance company regarding the process and additional cost this may incur.
