Timor Leste Immersion

On 3 July 10 students and 2 staff members embarked on the schools sixth Immersion to Timor-Leste.  With great excitement and some trepidation, we bid a teary farewell to parents for an exciting adventure. After a brief stopover in Darwin we landed in Dili to stifling heat, strange smells and sounds and our two drivers, Amil and Francesco who would become great friends by the end of our 10 days.

We travelled the countryside from Dili to Laleia to Letefoho meeting local people, immersing ourselves into their culture and having an amazing time. As we travelled by foot and by car we were met with friendly waves and smiles and shouts of malay, malay (foreigner) and the hospitality of the Timorese made us feel very special and welcomed.

Our immersion included us helping out students in a kindergarten, a school, and running a session with the local children at Laleia - where we distributed the stationary packs to very excited and thankful children. We also did some hard labour at Laleia where we helped build a path near the outdoor mass area.  This involved moving stones and dirt in rickety wheelbarrows in the midday heat.

The money we raised this year (approximately $12,000) was spread between the two communities we visited in Laleia and the Bakhita Centre in Letefoho. The money will be spent in a variety of ways depending on the needs of the people at the time. We also had the pleasure of sharing rosary beads, bracelets, soccer balls, stationary packs and pencil cases to the people we met. Another highlight was talking polaroid pictures of the children and some adults and seeing the absolute joy when they got to take home a photo of themselves.

During our final reflection, we wrote a poem that reflects how we all felt about our life-changing time in Timor. A special thankyou to everyone who helped support the immersion in any way, from donating stationary, buying a sausage, coming along to the formal and high tea, making rosary beads and giving gifts for us to donate.

From the Counsellors

Teaching children Empathy

There is a difference between Empathy and Sympathy that should be noted. Sympathy is feeling sorry for someone while empathy is understanding their struggle. No small task.

Children need Empathy to live a happy and successful life, as it is about seeing situations and events from the other person’s perspective

According to Michele Borba in her book, “Unselfie: Why Empathetic Kids Succeed in Our All-About –Me World”, it shouldn’t all be about the fancy degrees and high marks as it should be about cultivating a culture of Empathy. Children who show Empathy are able to understand and appreciate people around them better. They are able to collaborate, innovate and problem solve better and are often happier individuals

We would be better off in our competitive culture, not just to praise achievement but look at the acts of kindness towards each other in many different ways

Our society is becoming seriously deficit in the Empathy stakes and the introduction of social media and the “selfie” society as well as changes in parenting styles, are not helping this. In fact, it is helping to make our kids become narcissistic.Today’s kids are more self-absorbed than ever.  This can give rise to a culture of bullying, cheating and unhappiness, weak moral reasoning and mental health issues.

Empathy is born with face to face encounters. Borba says to be mindful of the time that children spend on social media which takes them away from this.

Cultivating Empathy is not usually high on the Parenting to Do list but it would be a good idea to make it so for the benefit of raising “kind” children.

Borba argues that we need to help kids develop a moral identity, not just praise them for good deeds

Help kids build their empathy muscles through play-acting, reading books that let them get inside characters’ minds, and watching inspiring movies. Activities that allow careful reflection on how others are feeling in a given situation, help build the skills needed for moral action.

“If we are serious about raising a kindhearted, caring generation, then our expectations must be a lot clearer to our kids,” - Michele Borba, author of UnSelfie: Why Empathetic Kids Succeed in Our All-About-Me World.

Tenison Woods College Students victorious at Youth Football Championships

Tenison Woods College was well represented at the 2017 South Australian Football Youth Championships during the holiday break. The following staff and students represented Glenelg in the U/17 & U/15 age divisions with both teams coming away with the country titles.

U/15
Harry Tunkin, Ben Gaffney, Bryn Carmody, Zac Bradley, Jaden Grosser (captain), Matt Davies, Leigh Redford, Hugh Armfield & Sam Dukalskis.

U/17
Declan Carmody, Reece Lillicrapp, Will Russell, Kenny Lam & Savi Randhawa. Coach Ciaran Buckley.

Undefeated all week, the U\15’s finished on top of their Crows division & faced off for the title against a strong Norwood country squad at Football Park. Trailing all game but with a ‘never say die’ attitude the boys charged home, and in the final minute took the lead and defended their state title they won last year - winning 8.8.56 to 8.7.55. All TWC students contributed strongly throughout the week and grabbed the attention of SAFNL selectors.

The U/17 team won 2 of their 3 matches and won the title with a superior percentage over their rivals. Glenelg were very impressed with all Tenison Woods College boys who represented Glenelg, and hopefully this will lead to future U/18 matches with the bays.

Waverley International School Netball Championships

In Week 10 of Term 2, 20 of Tenison Woods College’s most talented U/15 and Open age netball players travelled to Melbourne to compete in the Waverley International School Netball Championships.

The girls played in a four-day tournament, with up to 2 to 5 games played each day.

The U/15 girls were deemed undefeated at the conclusion of the minor rounds, and were placed in pool 1 to compete in a round robin series. The girls competed well against the other teams faced in the series, winning 3 out of 4 games. Despite being placed at the top of the ladder during the minor rounds, the one loss in the round robin tournament resulted in the girls being unable to qualify for the grand final, and were able to play for 6th position against Forest Hill College. The girls went down by 12 goals, finishing in 6th place out of the 17 teams in their age division.

The Open Girls had a very successful week, becoming undefeated in both the minor rounds, and round robin series in pool 4. The girls had a comfortable 12 goal win in the first semi-final against Gippsland Grammar, advancing them through to the grand final against Rowville Secondary College. The first half of the game saw both teams compete fiercely for top spot, scores being goal for goal at the conclusion of the second quarter. Unfortunately, the second half of the game saw the girls unable to keep up with Rowville’s scoring streak, going down by 5 goals at the final siren, becoming the runners up of the tournament.

Overall It was an outstanding effort by both teams and we are extremely proud of all of the girl’s performances as they displayed great sportsmanship and athleticism throughout the entire tournament.

Book Week 2017: Get ready for the Escape to Everywhere Parade

Friday 25 August (Week 5)  - 9.00am in the Barrie Holmes Stadium. Reception – Year 7.

Book Week 2017 during week 5 of this term asks your children to ‘Escape to Everywhere’; an exciting invitation with a world full of possibilities. One of the greatest joys of reading, for children and adults alike, is the opportunity to escape! Delve into our guide of ideas with your child to help decide their Book Week costume: will they escape to the past, a fantasy land or perhaps even another universe?

Escape to… the skies!
What better way to escape than to be the pilot of your own aircraft! The possibilities are endless; grab your pilot hat and fly away to an exotic island or perhaps even Antarctica!

Escape to… the past!
Have you ever wondered what it was like to live in the prehistoric era, amongst the dinosaurs? This book week you can find out! Grab your best dinosaur outfit or skip brushing your hair to be the perfect caveman. Other historical characters perfect for book week include Vikings, queens or knights in shining (or alfoil!) armour.

Escape to… Neverland!
It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s…Peter Pan! This Disney favourite is the perfect character to escape with this book week; easily recreated with tights and some green apparel. Or perhaps adorable fairy Tinkerbell is more your cup of tea – or Captain Hook!

Escape to… Mars!
Escape to another planet by dressing up as an astronaut! An alien or even a rocket could be other excellent space escape options.

Escape to… fantasy!
Don’t fancy time or space travel? Why not escape to a fantasy world and transform into a unicorn, an elf or fairy for book week!

With the magic of books comes endless possibilities! Where will Escape to Everywhere Book Week 2017 take you?

2017 Careers Evening at Mount Gambier TAFE

This year the Rotary Careers Expo is offering a Careers Evening on Thursday 10 August from 6pm-7:30pm at the Mount Gambier TAFE Campus to all age groups from year 9-12 for parents and students to gain information about tertiary studies, Centrelink information and the Defence Force. This is the main information session for families to find out about tertiary studies/Defence Force and ask any questions they may have about pathways, subjects, courses, entry, scholarships, Gap Year and Centrelink support. We would appreciate it if parents could contact Camille Clark for numbers either through Facebook or her email which is on the flier. We need your support for this event so that South East students and their families can be informed about this in the future.

Students also need to inform their home group teachers or contact Camille directly to book any of the 4 workshops on Early Childhood, Nursing, Allied Health or Cookery. Year 10 students will be attending between 9am-11:30am and year 9 students between 11:30am and 1:20pm on Friday 11 August. Year 9 students will receive their permission notes this week and they will work through the brochure with their home group teachers in preparation for the Expo and also for subject pathways later this term. Year 10 students have already had permission forms completed and they will go through the program with their PLP teachers on Monday week 2.

These activities are to help in preparation for students selecting future pathways and subject selection later this term. It is important that families start discussing interest areas and have a broad range of ideas that could possibly be the future direction for students to take.

Van D'Am Cycling Team visits College

On Tuesday 25 July Tenison Woods College welcomed members of the Van Damn Cycling Team. The team is in the region for the ‘Tour of the Great South Coast’ cycling race. Cyclists Aden Reynolds, Jesse Coyle and Angus Lyons spent time at the College talking with Year 3 students, along with members of the High Performance Sport Program’s Cycling class.

Additional to the Cycling Team’s visit, College students Jack Opperman and Pru Riddoch were lucky enough to score themselves a management position on the Van Damn Cycling Team. They shadowed team directors for the day on Wednesday 26 July, learning the ins and outs of preparing for a big event. Such an experience will allow the two HPSP students to learn how a team prepares mentally and physically for a 600km week of racing.

Greenhouse Progress

Over the term break the Grounds crew have been busily erecting our new greenhouse between the Old Dairy and the Stephanie Alexander Garden space. The greenhouse was a proposal pitched many years ago by the Science facility, who busily petitioned to have an outdoor learning space dedicated to biology. During 2016 and 2017, the Science, Hospitality and Religion team joined forces and again proposed the learning space, this time with success, with plans formalised and submitted to the Building and Grounds Committee.

Teaching teams are looking forward to utilising the greenhouse for a variety of learning opportunity as we are sure the students will be. The space provides a constant environment for our sporadic Mount Gambier climate and we look forward to sharing the fruit we hope to reap with the whole college community.
