Student Initiative Improves College Grounds

Over the past few months, the College has been victim to numerous vandalism attacks, predominantly on the front oval. Our Year 11 VET Furniture students were very concerned about this and suggested ways that we could avoid future vandalism. Some students proposed the idea of a fence that runs along the length of the driveway, creating a barrier between the oval and the driveway from the entrance, all the way to the gym car park. In one of their VET lessons, students started designing a post that would be decorative, but also a deterrent to the vandals.

After receiving approval from College management to go ahead with the project, the Year 11 students came up with a design and cost to install the fence. They initially installed a couple of posts to test the concept and to learn the ins and outs of alignment, leveling and plumbing of a post.  After the digging of six holes by hand, the concept design was agreed upon and the students organised to install the rest of the posts over one single day. This involved hiring a dingo and auger and with the assistance of the Grounds Team, students drilled the remaining 40 holes and installed the posts in a short space of time.

National Child Protection Week
Kicking off on Father’s Day, Sunday 3 September, National Child Protection Week is a wonderful opportunity for everyone in the community to think about how we can work together to keep all children safe.

NAPCAN (National Association for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect) was co-founded in 1987 by Rosemary Sinclair AO and Christine Stewart OAM. Since then NAPCAN has made a significant contribution to the safety and wellbeing of Australia's children and young people by raising public awareness of child abuse and neglect and its impacts, and by developing and promoting effective prevention strategies and programs.

NAPCAN was originally founded to:

  • Open up lines of communication between the different government departments, agencies, professionals and community groups working in the child protection field,
  • Create a national focus on the prevention of the abuse and neglect of children, and
  • Be the leader in the area of prevention of child abuse and neglect, promoting good parenting and nurturing of children through education.

Sacrament Process Preparation Begins
The next program through which the Parish, Families and Tenison Woods College work together is about to begin. The program is to prepare children to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession), towards the end of this year and then Confirmation and First Holy Communion in 2018.

All families who would like their child/children to be part of this process are invited to let the parish know of their intentions. A letter inviting families to become part of the Process of Initiation has been given to all children in Year 3 at Tenison Woods College, and to those in other year levels who have already indicated their intentions to be part of this process. The letter is also available from the Parish office or the College for anyone interested.

The process begins on Thursday 28 September, with a general information meeting to be held in the Tenison Woods College staff room from 7:00pm until 8:00pm, so the letter would need to be collected before then.

For more information, phone the Parish office on 87 256 566 or email mt.gambier.catholic1@bigpond.com

Parish Mass
A reminder that Parish mass is held each Thursday of the term (except Week 1) and is led by a different class or year level each week.

Mass is held at 9:15am in the College Chapel and all parents, grandparents and friends are welcome to attend.

The remaining roster for Term 3 masses is:

  • Thursday 7 September - Year 10
  • Thursday 14 September - Year 8
  • Thursday 21 September - Year 12
  • Thursday 28 September - Year 9

Fathers Day Breakfast

We enjoyed our annual Father’s Day Breakfast last Friday 1 September in the Barrie Holmes Stadium. This breakfast, facilitated by the Catholic Identity and Mission Team and Sugarloaf Café, was an opportunity to celebrate the gifts that fathers, grandfathers, uncles and significant male models offer young lives. Thank you to the many families who supported the event – a great way to start the day and lead into our Father’s Day weekend.

Student Free Day & Staff Formation Day: This Friday 8 September

A reminder that this Friday is a whole school student free day, to allow for our Staff Formation Day. The focus of the day will be to spend some time immersed in the story of Catholic education in Mount Gambier, a place imbued with the charisms of Josephite, Mercy and Marist charisms as well as the passion of committed Catholic educators.

The day will provide us with the opportunity to learn more about the history and the contemporary connections of the story to the work we do. It is anticipated that the day will help us appreciate upon whose shoulders we stand and as a result the nature of our call to service for our community.

Students win GovHack Competition

Congratulations to Year 9 students Dylan McCarthy, Liam Moulden and Edward Layzell who were recently announced as winners of the Junior category in this year’s GovHack event at the Mount Gambier Library from 28 - 30 July.

GovHack is an annual community development event, which brings together technology creatives and innovators with government data to explore and discover new ways to help create a better society. Teams identify problems to solve, build working prototypes, and make a short video showing what they did and why. Projects can include web, mobile applications, or even 3D printed visualisations to understand data and patterns.

Dylan, Liam and Edward’s idea was to create an application that taught children under the age of 13 how the iconic Great Barrier Reef is affected by human contact. The app is called Reef Dom. In the game you would ‘level up’ by buying more coral and getting experience from collecting the rubbish generated by the tourists visiting coral reef. Students implemented the app prototype in less than 40 hours and presented it as a video.

Their app prototype and the idea behind collecting the app data was highly appreciated by the organisers at the concluding awards ceremony in late August. Congratulations to the team for their efforts on this project and for winning the Junior Category.

2017 Reading Hour

It was lovely to share Reading Hour with some of our College families last Wednesday night. This Hour promotes that reading doesn’t only improve the mind but it also improves lives and makes better societies by increasing happiness, reducing stress, and improving health.

Principal David Mezinec and Teacher Librarian Chris Lloyd both shared stories to an excited young audience. Children wore their favourite Pyjamas, with this wonderful night of reading finished off by enjoying a cup of warm milo and some biscuits.

Thanks to everyone who helped make the night so much fun.
