Tenison Woods College Book Week Parade 2017

What a fabulous fun morning we had for the annual Book Week Parade! It was fantastic to see our Early Learning - Year 7 students - as well as staff - dressed up to celebrate the day and “Escape to everywhere!”. We loved seeing so many of our parent and caregiver community share the morning with us, and supporting our students to have a wonderful day. The fantastic day featured a guest appearance from Batman and Robin, as well as ‘Batdog’ (the wonderful ‘Sarge’ owned by our PR and Events Manager, Emma Herring). I think we will need to work hard next year to top Batman and Robin’s visit!

Care for Creation
In June 2015, Pope Francis wrote a letter to the world about caring for the earth, our common home. It was called Laudato Si. Later that year, he declared 1 September to be a World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation. This annual day of prayer reminds us that God has entrusted creation to our care.

Pope Francis wrote in Laudato Si that we as Christians are called to contribute to resolving the ecological crisis which humanity is presently experiencing. “The ecological crisis thus summons us to a profound spiritual conversion: Christians are called to “an ecological conversion whereby the effects of their encounter with Jesus Christ become evident in their relationship with the world around them” (Laudato Si, 217). For “living our vocation to be protectors of God’s handiwork is essential to a life of virtue; it is not an optional or a secondary aspect of our Christian experience” (ibid.).

I am delighted that our College community is committing itself with increased intensity to a systemic and planned approach to caring for creation. Such approach is complementing the effort of individual students, staff and parents who are dedicated to ecological sustainability.

Season of Creation
September 1 was proclaimed as the World Day of Prayer for Creation by the Orthodox Church in 1989, and many other Christian churches have joined since then, with Pope Francis most recently in 2015. It was then extended to be a month-long Season of Creation, ending on October 4 (Feast of St. Francis). Classes at Tenison Woods College will be marking each week of the Season of Creation in a variety of ways . Pope Francis’ call to pray for Creation can be viewed here: http://seasonofcreation.org/

8/9 Netballers win State Championship - 5 years running

A massive congratulations to the Tenison Woods College Mount Gambier Year 8/9 Netball Girls becoming State Champions!

Travelling to the SSSSA (Secondary School Sports South Australia) State Championships at Priceline Stadium in Adelaide, the girls contested Pool A on Tuesday 29 August. After a slow start to the day losing their first match, the girls fought hard and won their way into the Semi-Final to face Scotch College.

An outstanding performance earned them a spot in the Grand Final against Trinity College. The Titans displayed strength and determination through the whole game. The final score was 41-30 and Tenison Woods College was crowned the 8/9 State Champions for the 5th year in a row!

The Year 10 and Open Teams also competed on the same day, both putting in strong performances.

The Year 10 girls made it through to the Grand Final and came runner-up, second place across the state. This is another outstanding effort from Tenison Woods College netballers, coaches, staff, families and support crew.

The open girls netball team unfortunately didn't win their Semi-Final, knocking them out of the grand final game. They played off for the minor placings, with a tough match the girls fought hard and their rivals were too strong, leaving them with a very resepctable 4th placing.

Congratulations again to all involved.

Year 2 Students host bake sale for The Mount Gambier Cancer Council

Four compassionate Tenison Woods College Year 2 Students hosted a cupcake sale to raise money for the Mount Gambier Branch of Cancer Council SA.

Kaeleb Muhovics, Lily Milich, Isabella Moody and Kiersten Cole approached Year 5 Teacher Becky Higgins to support their idea of raising funds for this worthy cause.

Students designed the posters to advertise their bake sale, involving their classes to take part by baking some cupcakes to donate for the sale. The word quickly spread and our wonderful college community got behind the students and the cupcakes soon flowed in!

The students took advantage of the delicious treats, but we think the teachers and College staff had their fair share as well!

A total of $465.45 was raised, and this valuable money was presented to Karen Peterson of the Mount Gambier Cancer Council Branch. Karen was overwhelmed by the generosity and foresight these students displayed. Well done to all involved.

Scholastic Book Fair Returns

The Scholastic Book Fair will be coming to Tenison Woods College again this term. It will be open to families for one week, from Thursday 31 August to Thursday 7 September.

Held in the staffroom, the Book Fair will open weekdays during two time slots each day; at 8.15am to 8.30am and re-open again at 3.20pm – 3.45pm.

There is always a great selection of books and stationery to purchase, and we have both cash and credit card facilities available.

Tenison Woods College receives a percentage of the sales which we can use to purchase items/books. The sales from last year bought a large selection of big books for the Junior School to use.

Care for Children in the Mornings Before School

A reminder to families that the College commences its yard duty supervision of students at 8:20am each morning. We ask that students arrive at school as close as possible to this time to ensure the safety and supervision of the children can be guaranteed. Arrival at school considerably earlier than this time potentially places the safety of your children at risk.

We would also like to inform families that Sarah Seebohm and her committed Out of School Hours Care team offer a fun, caring and professional before and after school program for our community. The OSHC offers before school care that is only $10 per child before the rebate is factored into the cost. OSHC before school care gives parents peace of mind in the morning, given that the school grounds are not formally supervised until 8:20am.

For further information and bookings contact Aleisha or Sarah on 8724 4633 or email oshc@tenison.catholic.edu.au. You can also visit the OSHC page on our Tenison Woods College website – www.tenison.catholic.edu.au.

Year 12 Food and Hospitality students impress staff

On Friday 25 August our Year 12 Food and Hospitality class catered for a select and privileged group of College staff in the school’s lecture theatre. The sit down 3-course meal had a rustic theme throughout the evening.  The students named their catering enterprise ‘Reserved’.

The students consisted of Lucy Williams, Lily Falkner-Hunt, Peyton Bennett, Sarah Gaylard, Liam Neshoda and Brydie Milligan.

Students performed to an excellent standard and worked co-operatively in the high-pressures of kitchen operations, impressing all of their guests on the night.

Regional Soccer Success

Last Friday, the Year 8/9 Boys Soccer team competed in the SESSSA knockout competition at Blue Lake Sports Park. The team played against Grant High School, Mount Gambier High School and Bordertown High School.

Each match offered a unique challenge and all were played in a hard, competitive spirit and the team must be commended for their discipline. The boys adapted to the formation quickly with Caleb Gentile covering the defense, Broc Linden and Soe Ler Moo controlling the midfield, as Connor Prior, Ross Mackle and Oscar O’Leary fought hard upfront - The latter opening the scoring with a long-range strike from outside the box. Grant High replied through a deflected goal but Linden and Mackle ensured that before half time Tenison was on the front foot once again. The second half proved goalless, despite many attempts and the College boys took the win.

In game two, the boys faced a strong Mount High side and found themselves behind early on. After some encouraging attacks, the equaliser came direct from a corner taken by Tenison Vice-Captain, Connor Prior. He also combined extremely well with Soe Ler Moo just before half time to add to the team’s tally to ensure a 2-1 lead at the interval.  An injury to Gay Lay Htoo Ku perhaps distracted the boys as Mount levelled from a short corner and, despite their best efforts the scores remained deadlocked at full-time. Penalties were required to settle the game and Josh Cornolo proved the hero – Saving two kicks and stepping up to score the winning spot kick in sudden death!

Following that win and Bordertown’s win over Grant High, the boys were able to relax and they comfortably accounted for their opposition in the final game, 7-0.

Overall, the team were led impressively by Austin Rossi and secured their passage to Adelaide, having played three, won three, accumulating 8 points, scoring 12, while conceding just 3 in a dominant all-round display.

Sacrament Process Preparation Begins

The next program through which the Parish, families and Tenison Woods College work together to prepare children to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) and then Confirmation and First Holy Communion in 2018 is about to begin.

All families who would like their child / children to be part of this process are invited to let the parish know of their intentions. A letter inviting families to become part of the Process of Initiation with their children has been given to all children in Year 3 at Tenison Woods College, and to those in other year levels who have already indicated their intentions to be part of this process. The letter is also available from the parish office or the College for anyone interested.

The process begins on Thursday 28 September, with a General Information Meeting to be held in the Tenison Woods College Staff Room from 7.00pm until 8.00pm so the letter would need to be collected before then.

For more information phone the Parish Office on 8725 6566 or email mt.gambier.catholic1@bigpond.com
